Festivalprofile
The Regensburg Short Film Week was founded in 1994 by the Arbeitskreis Film Regensburg e.V. and takes place annually in March. Over the years, it has expanded to include ten awards across five competitions, ranging from international to regional. Fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental films are given equal importance.
Beyond the competitions, the extensive special program focuses on thematic highlights and country spotlights. These are complemented by retrospectives, lectures, exhibitions, and workshops.
For the youngest short film enthusiasts, children and youth programs are curated, along with DIY workshops. Additionally, there are educational short film offerings tailored for schools, with the option of media pedagogical support.
Last but not least, the Short Film Week has made a name for itself over the past thirty years with its legendary "Plattenfilme" - live soundtracks to short films using vinyl records - and the Zündfunkparty at the Leerer Beutel, attracting filmmakers and short film enthusiasts alike to the charming cinemas of the cathedral city!
Competition Sections
The screening groups of the International Short Film Week Regensburg select the best films from over 2000 submissions annually. These form the individual competition blocks, which are then shown to the audience and a professional jury on-site at the cinema.
Productions from around the world can be seen in the International Competition, while short films produced domestically are screened in the German or Bavarian Competition. The Window to the Region offers a glimpse into the local short film landscape of the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria. In the Architecture Film Competition- the only theme-specific competition - international films with architectural relevance compete for the Architecture Film Prize. All competitions exclusively feature films that are no older than two years.
Arbeitskreis Film Regensburg e.V.
The International Short Film Week Regensburg is organized and hosted by the Arbeitskreis Film Regensburg e.V. (AKF). In addition to the Short Film Week, AKF organizes the Regensburger Stummfilmwoche in the summer - Germany's oldest silent film week - and CinEScultura, the Spanish Film and Culture Festival in Regensburg. Throughout the year, AKF operates a cinema: the Filmgalerie im Leeren Beutel. The programming of this venue follows the tradition of sophisticated, municipally funded cinemas placed beyond the mainstream.
PROFILE &
HISTORY
We are member of
As a founding member of the AG Kurzfilm, we support short filmmakers. The AG Kurzfilm is the nationwide representation for German short film. Members of this umbrella organization include film festivals, film and art schools, short film distributors, as well as institutions within the film and cinema industry. The aim is to enhance the public perception of German short films domestically and internationally, as well as to improve conditions for short film production and distribution.
The International Short Film Week Regensburg also aims to network with Bavarian film festivals and is therefore a founding member of the Association of Bavarian Film Festivals. Our goal is not only to collectively represent the Bavarian film festival scene and support each other but also to advocate for better political and institutional support. We believe that the importance of film festivals in the distribution chain is not adequately recognized.
The Short Film Conference has existed since 1970 as a non-profit organization and is the only international entity dedicated to uniting the global short film community.
