NEW QUEER SLOVENIA

Queer film art in the countries of the former Yugoslavia has undergone significant transformations over the decades. In the 1980s, a progressive underground scene emerged, carving out space for itself despite state censorship. However, the post-war years of the 1990s brought a wave of renationalization and retraditionalization, which nearly led to the cultural erasure of queer expressions. With the turn of the millennium, Slovenia’s queer culture experienced a powerful resurgence—driven by a rebellious punk spirit and sustained by activists who laid the foundation for today’s thriving scene. The New Queer sLOVEnia program invites audiences to engage with the shifting realities of young queer generations in Slovenia. While queer identity remains a central theme, the increasing normalization of queer culture is opening up new perspectives and narratives. The film selection spans various genres and explores a broad spectrum of sexual identities, making it clear that queer filmmakers in Slovenia are far from invisible or oppressed—a narrative often projected in Western discourse. One year after the 40th anniversary of the Slovenian LGBT movement, this program celebrates the achievements of queer resistance while also looking toward the future. Without decades of struggle for freedom of expression, the vibrant and colorful new wave of queer films we see today would not have been possible.
