RESTORED SLOVENIAN CLASSICS

Curated and moderated by Matevž Jerman, Igor Prassel and Varja Močnik. In cooperation with the Slovenian Film Center and the Slovenian Film Archive, the Slovenian Cinematheque presents the German premiere of seven digitally restored Slovenian classics. This program highlights the influence of important filmmakers from the history of Slovenian cinema and shows the explosive creativity of their cinematic expression, which consistently integrates formal and narrative experimentation. The historical journey begins with YOUTH BUILDS, an internationally acclaimed documentary about the construction of socialism after liberation, followed by LAUNDRESSES from Bizovik, a film reportage about washerwomen in the countryside by Jože Bevc. COLOURS OF MEMORY is then dedicated to the painter Jože Spacal and his art. An outstanding experimental short film by cinematographer and director Karpo Godina, FRIED BRAIN of Pupilija Ferkeverk, calls for freedom of expression and demonstrates the visual power of Slovenian avant-garde cinema. SLAVICA EXCEPTION presents a documentary portrait of a professional stripper, while CUKRARNA, Jože Pogačnik's homage to a historic building and its inhabitants, oscillates between a glorious past and a tragic present. The final film is KISS ME GENTLE RUBBER, a milestone in Slovenian animated film.
