SLOVENIA: ANIMATED FILMS
Curated and moderated by Igor Prassel The new millennium brought a revival of Slovenian animated film, after production capacities had long been limited. In recent years, the Slovenian Film Centre has increasingly recognized the importance of animated film. Thanks to financial support from national public television and numerous co-productions, a new generation of animators has been given the opportunity to realize their visions. The future of Slovenian animated film looks promising and diverse. An outstanding example of the rising quality of Slovenian short animated films is the award-winning puppet animation BOLES by Špela Čadež. Over the past ten years, many talented young authors - including Leon Vidmar, Zarja Menart and Lea Vučko with Damir Grbanović - have created successful films. Vidmar and Menart were introduced to the art of animation by Čadež: Leon Vidmar, for example, used this knowledge to realize his stop-motion puppet debut FAREWELL, while Zarja Menart, one of Slovenia's most original young filmmakers, completed her cut-out short film THREE BIRDS. Another highlight is the work of Dušan Kastelic, a self-taught master of 3D animation. With his impressive short film THE BOX, he caused an international sensation and established himself as one of Slovenia's leading animation artists. This program is presented in cooperation with the Animateka International Animated Film Festival and the DSAF Slovenian Animated Film Association.
